The Origins of the Tiny Pocket: A Wild West Flashback
To get to the bottom of this pocket’s purpose, a dash through history is required—back to the 19th century, when jeans were considered hard-wearing workwear and cowboys ruled the Wild West. According to Levi Strauss, this so-called mini pocket was invented as a practical feature to protect pocket watches—those dapper timepieces that would swing from a chain, long before wristwatches were commonplace.
And so, this clever compartment, positioned on the right, earned the enduring name « watch pocket »—a term still used by Levi Strauss & Co. to this day. But as time marched on, society changed, and that tiny space gained plenty of other nicknames to match its evolving uses:
- Coin pocket—for your loose change
- Ticket pocket—just big enough for your train stub
- Condom pocket—well, we’ll let that one speak for itself!
During World War II, the company even removed all the little iron rivets from the watch pocket in the manufacturing process, in order to save metal for the war effort.
